Renewable energy

  • Definition of renewable energy:

Renewable energy is energy that derived from a natural source that is replenished at a higher rate than it is consumed. For example, sunlight and wind which are both constantly being replenished.

The definition of renewable energy is only about the replenishment of a energy source. Renewable energy is not directly related to being sustainable. It also does not mention anything about the transport of the energy and the sustainability.

  • Kinds of Renewable energy and how it's produced
    • Solar energy: Solar energy is the most abundant renewable energy. The rate that solar energy is intercepted is 10,000 times greater than the rate at which humankind consumes the energy.
    • Wind energy: Wind energy is harnessed by the kinetic energy of moving wind by large wind turbines on or offshore.
    • Geothermal energy: Utilizes the accessible thermal energy from the earths' interior. The heat is extracted by geothermal sources all over the world. Especially the ring of fire has a lot of potential of generating geothermal energy. It is a mature and reliable source of energy that can be generated 24/7 and 365 days per year because it does not depend on weather like solar energy and wind energy.
    • Ocean energy: Quit new and at an early stage. Ocean energy generates kinetic and thermal energy of seawater to produce electricity and heat.
    • Hydropower: Generates energy from moving water from higher to lower elevations. It can be generated from reservoirs and rivers. Hydropower can be negatively impacted by the climate change and depends on the rainfall. It can also negatively impact the ecosystem.
    • Bioenergy: bioenergy is produced by a variety of organic materials. By production of bioenergy has greenhouse gas emission but at a lower rate than non-renewable energy. Using bioenergy at a greater rate will probably have a negative impact on the environment en ecosystem.
